Apple Tree Care in Santa Cruz


  Jan.-March  Dormant sprays to inhibit  fungal/bacterial  pathogens and pests.

                              

  January    Dormant pruning….an invigorating exercise. Clean up

                            all forgotten fruit from tree branches and floor.


  February   More of the same as Jan. Plant new tree.


  March        Cut down cover crops, add any additional organic

                           fertilizer/compost.  Mulch. Set up irrigation system if required.


  April    Pray for good flying weather and watch the bees

                          pollinate. Put out coddling moth traps by end of month.


  May          Thin fruit once set. Finger prune and train young trees.


  June            Be aware of watering needs. Remove any “stung”

                           and/or sunburned fruit.


  July              Second coddling moth trap set

                           Begin summer pruning…a weakening exercise


  August    More summer pruning and eat early apples


  September    Eat apples!   Summer pruning


  October    Eat more apples!  (Don’t forget to store a couple)


 
November   Sow cover crops and clean up orchard floor.  Order bare root trees.


  December Reflect upon the year past and figure out where to plant more trees!
